Patsy DeLacey is an inspiration to us all. This high school Girl Scout is transforming the tragedy of losing her mother into the miracle of life by donating grown produce from her garden to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia’s neighbors in need. Her mother was a huge advocate of the Foodbank’s work and her memory lives on in the tradition Patsy has chosen to continue by helping hungry citizens of our region. For more on this touching story, please click here.

Here at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, we have seen the rates of those who need our help skyrocket. Last year, we served almost 250,000 individuals. This year, with 2 months of agency reporting to be calculated, we have already served over 330,000! And these people aren’t who you think they are…these are folks who sit next to you in church, those who you pass at work, people who stand behind you in the post office. The economy has affected each of us in different ways, but for some, decisions like buying medicine or putting food on the table is an everyday struggle. We need a mass movement to end hunger here in America; we’re thrilled that President Obama is keeping his eye on this worthy cause.

Clip Seals and/or Lose Weight while Helping those in Need

PFP Biggest loser Graphic

Every year, millions of Americans resolve to lose weight. If you’ve made your resolution to drop some holiday pounds, then join us in the Pound For Pound challenge. This year, you can help the millions of Americans who struggle with hunger while doing something good for yourself.

General Mills, The Biggest Loser and Feeding America have joined forces to support the Pound For Pound Challenge, which will help Americans lose weight while providing hunger relief. Through the challenge, individuals can either sign up here to pledge their weight loss goals, or clip and mail Pound For Pound seals from specially marked General Mills products. For every pound lost and every seal received, General Mills will donate 10 cents to Feeding America – a portion of these funds will be given to your local food bank!

Feeding America will distribute the funds to local food banks based on the ZIP codes of consumers who participate in the program, so the areas of the United States that participate most actively in the Pound For Pound Challenge stand to benefit most from the donations.

Participants can pledge to lose weight from December 15, 2008 to April 27, 2009 and mail in seals from December 15, 2008 to December 31, 2009. If it is simpler, you may drop your Pound for Pound Seals at the Foodbank, 800 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, Virginia 23504.

We’re hoping to have lots of local groups, faith based organizations, businesses, etc. participating, not only individually, but also in teams to make it more fun. Teams can even come to the Foodbank to get weighed as a group on our large scales! The winner of the team challenge will be based on greatest number of pounds lost per capita so it levels the playing field regardless of group size. Remember to register on the website above as individuals first. If you have a group that wants to join as a team in the competitive spirit of helping our neighbors in need, please contact Danielle Ayers, Communications Specialist/Grant Writer at 757-314-4570 to sign-up.

A special weigh in will take place on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 5:30 pm at the Foodbank. We hope to have a media presence so come join the fun!!!

We hope you will participate on your own or with a group. Save seals; shed pounds!

Feature in "The Shopper"

Food drives bring hope to thousands with the help of volunteers
by Allison Joyce

Sitting down to a bountiful feast with family and friends during the holiday season is something many of us look forward to each year.  Making sure others less fortunate can do the same shifts the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, and the hundreds of community non-profit groups it supports, into overdrive as they strive to raise awareness about hunger and the need for food drives.  Marianne Smith, Chief Development Officer for the Foodbank, says there are many low-income families that are struggling every day to survive soaring food, fuel and healthcare costs.
